Lisa Slovis, Metal Artist

Lisa Slovis knew at 16 that she wanted to make jewelry. She worked with foil, scissors, and glue and was fortunate in having her talent recognized by a teacher and her family. While in high school, she went to a special summer program where she worked with real metal and made some of her first peices.

Lisa describes her art as a creation of both jewelry and metal objects that reflect her interest in athletics and art. By incorporating movement and function in these pieces, the participant is enticed to interact with them on a more intimate and tactile level. The viewer can have fun with the pieces by touching, playing, and manipulating the arrangement of parts. The utilitarian function in her pieces draw the viewer in and not only allows them, but often forces them to interact with it. Developed around characteristics of toys and ritual or ceremonial objects, these pieces can be used, manipulated and played with. Many of her pieces have a sense of movement, such as her "speed racer" teakettle and the teakettles that rock. she also creates pieces that fit together like a puzzle or nestle together.

Lisa Slovis received her BFA at the University of Wisconsin in 1995 and her MFA at San Diego State University in 1998. There she learned techniques to be able to make anything she could dream of, with unique school assignments such as the challenge to create a "salt shaker that doesn't shake". Slovis presently resides in San Diego, California. She teaches Metalsmithing and Design at a local Community College. Slovis shows her work at retail and wholesale shows and in over 30 galleries across the country including Taboo Studio in San Diego, CA, Telluride Gallery of Fine Art in Telluride, CO, and the Freehand Gallery in Beverly Hills, CA.
