Deb Jemmott - Failure as a Creative Tool

Deb Jemmott, the speaker for our September meeting, believes that we all have the potential to be creative.  This belief lies at the core of her 30-year career as a teacher of metalsmithing and jewelry making.  It also accounts for her being in high demand as an instructor.  Many students attend on-going classes with her for years, because she inspires them to move forward on their own creative journeys and because she generously shares skills and techniques that make forward motion possible.

Many artists encounter general problems with finding and/or sharing their own voices.  Others may get stuck on just one project that won’t move through the “birth canal.” Both situations feel extremely unpleasant and are often difficult to know how to handle.

Deb’s presentation, titled Failure as a Creative Tool, will offer some approaches to coping with creative blockages, large and small, no matter what the chosen medium. We will also have the opportunity to engage in a few individual exercises to encourage creative thinking.

Her impressive credentials include a BFA from the University of Houston and an MA from San Diego State University.  Both degrees are in Art, specializing in Jewelry and Metalsmithing.  Her work has been featured in American Style, American Craft, Metalsmith, San Diego Home/Garden, Window and Wall, and Redbook magazines.  In addition to creating jewelry, Deb has worked on a larger scale to create functional art for the home and office.  These pieces include lighting, tableware, cabinet hardware, small sculpture, wall sconces, candle stands and desk accessories.  Deb is also an avid knitter and felter.
